The population is aging and by the year 2030 seniors aged 65 and older, will represent nearly 20% of the US population.1 In addition to the general demands on the healthcare system posed by the age-related needs of this sector, seniors’ autonomy valued independence can be further jeopardized by memory and cognitive problems Of key concern is neurodegenerative Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease which disrupts thought, memory, and language, affects as many as 5.3 million Americans. This number is expected to increase to 7.7 million by the year 2030.²
Without a cure, current therapies, including cholinesterase inhibitors such as Pfizer’s Aricept® and glutamate regulators such as Forest Laboratories’ Namenda®, can help slow the progression of symptoms. New research is focusing on treating Alzheimer’s disease by targeting hallmark cellular manifestations – specifically inhibiting or blocking beta-amyloid from forming plaques, and by breaking up neurofibrillary tangles.
The market for effective Alzheimer’s Disease treatment is enormous and growing, as indeed is the need for therapies and tools to facilitate a high quality of life for this aging sector. Effective market research is needed to understand the drivers and barriers to effective help-seeking and healthcare system engagement, treatment decision-making processes (on the part of physicians, sufferer’s and care-givers/significant others) and the design of effective agents and their supporting clinical trials.
